Is There Anybody Out There?

“Is there anybody out there?”- Pink Floyd

There have been so many attacks and bad news stories in the North American media about the heavy oil industry and the tar sands that I sympathize with the industry for pulling a disappearing act.

Recent negative media reports:

  • 500+ ducks died in a tailings pond. Alberta government levies fines.
  • Study focusing on downstream cancer rates is released.
  • President Obama not quite stating that the Tar Sands produce “dirty oil” but certainly implying it.
  • The usual coverage of the activists climbing bridges, writing graffiti etc.
  • Recent media campaigns showing “dirty oil” oozing across the border.
  • The impending March issue of National Geographic which some media members are callingĀ  the “baby-seal” moment.

This is clearly an organized and well managed campaign by multiple organizations comprising the usual suspects of environmental groups, philanthropists and activists, but also with real support and possibly participation in the American Congress,Senate and even the White House itself.

With the magnitude of the forces arrayed against the industry, I really do sympathize with the industry for keeping out of sight. However, this is not a luxury that either industry shareholders or the communities that rely upon the economic activity (which technically is every community in Canada, due to wealth sharing arrangements) can afford.

Will the industry answer this white glove in the face in a timely manner? Or at all?

So many jobs and families are on the line that it is imperative the industry win this battle. I hope the heavy oil industry is preparing to do just that.
